Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment with new affixes. They can also improve the base stats of the item or provide additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.
Items that have weak bases, like rings can be upgraded to a stronger base. Items with strong bases, such as eth Titans have little change in their stats.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be slotted into trinkets, weapons, armor and gathering tools, providing an added bonus or effect when the equipment is in use. They can be purchased from vendors, retrieved as loot gathered by enemies or received from chests or missions. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level before they are upgraded.
In order to upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the user must select it, and then click the Upgrade button on the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats and the required component or materials.
There are three kinds of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which include gems, can be placed in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are restricted to a specific type. Infusions are jewels that can only be used in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used with any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add the suffix to the end of item names. For example, adding the suffix Glyph would make a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If the player upgrades their gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs by a different one the previous one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions that can be freely swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from previous versions. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The cost of upgrading is increased with each level however the materials required don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of these items, instead of spreading upgrade costs over multiple pieces.
When an item is leveled out in this way, it is capable of receiving a new set of upgrade components, as well as an increase in the probability that the upgrade will succeed. This bonus is called the Artisan's Energy. It will reset to 0 if an upgrade fails or increases when the upgrade succeeds.
Once a piece is upgraded to the maximum level, it can receive the affixes needed to enhance its abilities. The number of affixes that are available is contingent on the item's base. For example an uncommon or rare weapon with a normal base will have no more than two affixes available for it, while legendary armors will have up to eight affixes available for it.
Each upgrade step requires a certain number of Flightstones or Crests, based on whether the item is at its current level and in what slot it is placed in. Weapons usually require more Flightstones than other equipment.
If an item fails to attain its maximum level The NPC will offer players the option to transfer it to another character and re-infuse it with another set of upgrades. This process can take between one and two hours, and costs the same amount of materials. However, it has a lower rate of success.
Engineers employ a level to measure the height of the building to a known location, such as a benchmark. This method is known as a "level-loop." It involves taking readings with the level, backsighting rod, and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method ensures that buildings are constructed to an extremely high level of accuracy and security.
Rerolling
Rerolling is the process of altering the upgrade components of an item. It is a crucial aspect of the game, and it can improve an item's damage, strength or other attributes. You can do this through the menu for items, or by pressing the Reroll button whenever you upgrade an item. Rerolling items can be costly and should be used sparingly.
The game allows players to recycle upgraded items, and use them to obtain tokens for rerolls. These tokens can be used to upgrade the original item or a comparable item. Recyclable items have a level gauge that shows how much of the upgrade gauge is filled. The amount of level that has been filled is contingent on the rarity and the upgrade cost of the item.
Prior to this, certain upgrades were given priority affixes that made them more accessible for players to roll. This meant that you'd receive the stats that mattered most to your build more often than other items.
